Asafa Powell, Jamaican 100m world record holder before Usain Bolt, retires at 40

LAUSANNE, November 28, 2022 – Asafa Powell retired from track and field after nearly two decades of competition. The Jamaican made the announcement via Twitter on Sunday afternoon (November 27), three days after celebrating his 40th birthday. Powell owns the record of 97 career sub-10s runs in 100m, the last coming on 1st September 2016. He is the fastest man in history without an Olympic or World 100m title.

“It was a great week of celebrating my birthday and officially putting down my spikes, opening a new chapter in my life,” Powell tweeted. Bolt filmed a video to wish his countryman well upon retirement.
